Sol Italy
Sol Italy is a add-on module for the
Orbiter
free space simulator (an add-on module adds some optional features to the Orbiter simulator).
The philosophy of the Orbiter space simulator is to provide a free space simulator, allowing for example fans of the
space exploration to take off from a planet, go into orbit to repair a communications satellite and back to the ground.
You can also practice interplanetary travel, such as the famous Apollo travel to the Moon.
The strength of Orbiter is the community of fans who helped produce so many add-on modules, which have greatly enriched the range
of experiences available in the simulator. The add-on modules can be of any type, ranging from the "technical" modules,
which implement basic functions such as sound, navigation instruments and so on. But there are also some "entertaining" modules,
which allow you to use the simulator to test futuristic fiction space ships,
such as the Eagles Area 1999 or the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars (see
complete list).
I have contributed to the project by developing the
City Builder
Orbiter tool, that I used to create the Sol Italy add-on, which is a module allowing to add 22 Italian cities
with their corresponding airports. In particular the module contains the high-resolution map of the Venice Lagoon, allowing
realistic take off and landing from San Marco airport.
Here there are some screenshots describing the final result:
